Review: PCA Skin Perfecting Protection SPF 30

I always tell my clients the importance of wearing  SPF 30 everyday.  Protect your skin from sun damage, collagen & elastin deterioration (prevent wrinkles), free radical damage, environmental pollution, and most importantly, skin cancer.   I came across a light spf that promised to aid in treating hyperpigmentation (darkening of skin caused by increased melanin from sun damage or acne) and not cause breakouts.  I was very excited to try a SPF with Bearberry, Licorice Root Extract, Kojic Acid, Mulberry Root Extract, and Lactic Acid.

"This revolutionary broad-spectrum UVA/UVB product combines the superior protective benefits of Z-Cote and other potent sunscreen agents with five melanogenesis inhibitors. This unique blend of ingredients works to reduce existing skin discoloration while preventing future hyperpigmentation. In addition, potent antioxidants caffeine and silybum marianum extract, commonly referred to as milk thistle, work to fight damaging environmental free radicals, inflammation and the formation of sunburn cells. perfecting protection spf 30 is suitable for all skin types and is also recommended following peels, lasers, other in-office procedures for its skin-soothing properties and inhibition of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. "-PCA Skin

I thought I could really knock out my hyperpigmentation faster (plus a lightening gel) with these lightening/brightening ingredients.  I found that the 9.8 % Zinc Oxide never fully absorbed into my skin, creating a white cast and bringing out my acne scars even more.  The lightening ingredients had no affect on my skin.  I avoid the sun, wear hats and sunglasses to prevent further darkening of my uneven skin tone, but no success with this SPF.  My uneven skin tone became darker, not lighter.

After trying many sunscreens with Zinc Oxide, I believe it is a culprit of my clogged pores.  I discontinued Zinc Oxide for a week and my congested skin dissipated.  I had high hopes for this product, but it did not work for me.

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide (9.8%), Octinoxate (7.5%). Water, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isononyl Isononanoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, SD Alcohol 40-B, Polyacrylate-13, Dimethicone, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Lactic Acid, Kojic Acid, Butylene Glycol, Morus Alba Root Extract, Arctostaphylos Uva Ursi Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Caffeine, Silybum Marianum Extract, Arginine, Microcrystalline Cellulose, C20-22 Alkyl Phosphate, C20-22 Alcohols, Polyisobutene, Cetearyl Glucoside, Caprylyl Glycol, Cellulose Gum, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Sodium PCA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol.

Review: Control Corrective Salicylic Wash The Answer for Acne

I have been using this cleanser for only 3 days and the texture of my skin is already smoother, softer, and my blemishes are shrinking.  I have not had any new blemishes!  These are great results for my skin.  I am ecstatic with these results!

"Sweep away dead skin cell build-up so blackheads and whiteheads don't stand a chance. By dissolving sticky pore-clogging oils and cellular debris, exfoliating Salicylic Wash creamy gel helps reduce congestion and improve skin texture on the face, back, shoulders and arms."-Control Corrective

The cleanser is a gentle soft pearl solution, is not overstimulating, does not smell like harsh chemicals, does not irritate my skin and a little product goes a long way.  2% Salicylic Acid dissolves dead skin cells and pore clogging oils, preventing clogged pores.  Aloe Vera Juice and Chamomile calm irritated skin.  The cleanser feels silky on my skin,  leaves my skin feeling extremely clean, without stripping my skin of moisture.  After cleansing my skin feels great, not tight, but comfortable.  This cleanser delivers on all its claims, I am sold.  I Love it!  Recommended for normal, combination, oily and acne-prone skin types.

Review: Feed Your Skin with Dr. Alkaitis Holistic Organic Skin Food

I was drawn to this line, because I have seen it in numerous magazines and its “plant derived products”. I agree with there motto, “A Healthy skin is beautiful skin”. My skin is very sensitive, so I have been looking for a line that does not have irritating chemicals, dyes, GMO's (genetically modified organisms), and synthetics. Dr. Alkaitis says, “If you can't eat it, don't put it on your skin.” I did not eat the products, but I found this statement pursuasive.

Facts about Dr. Alkaitis Products

-Includes my listed requirements in a skincare line above, including no transfats.
-All products are raw health food for the skin.
-All products are edible & easily absorbed into the skin.
-Natural & made fresh (never older then 2 weeks prior to shipping).
-Not tested on animals.
-100% Certified Organic Aloe Vera Gel is the base of all products (instead of water).
-All products are formulated and manufactured by Dr. Alkaitis.
-All products are biologically active.
-Certified Organic Alcohol (the drinkable kind).
-All products adapt to your skin's needs.
-All products are gender neutral.

This line has made my skin look and feel “normal”, instead of oily. My skin is smoother and softer. I like this result, because other products tend me dry out my oily skin making it uncomfortable and counteract by producing more oil. The products smell like light essential oils, including sandalwood and rosemary to name a few. I did however, experience a some redness from the essential oils, alcohol and seaweed ingredients.

Organic Purifying Toner

Acts as an astringent, a toner, a skin balancer; an anti-inflammatory, and heals burns; excellent for after-sun treatment.”-Dr.Alkaitis
One of my favorite from the line! It left my skin soft and moisturized. I use the product from the palm of my hand, dab onto fingertips and press into skin. My skin was a tiny bit pink, but it subsides after about 10 minutes. This product made my oily skin feel like a normal skin type, leaving my skin shine free.
I would recommend this toner for all skin types, especially oily skin types.

Ingredients: Into a base of organic Aloe Vera gel*, Witch Hazel and organic grain alcohol* (from the fermentation of organically grown grains), the following organic and wild-crafted herbs are blended: Greater Nettle*, Wild Chamomile flowersº, Myrrhº, European Elder blossoms*, Marsh Mallow*, French Lavender flowers*, Curacao Orange*, Benzoinº, Rosemary*, Wild Fennelº and Balm Mint*. Grapefruit* and Lemon* extracts. Sea Oakº, Atlantic Kelpº and Pearl Mossº. Also added are natural vitamin B and vitamin C complexes and 100% pure Essential Oils. * - Signifies certified organically grown. º - Signifies ethically wild-crafted.

Organic Soothing Gel

A moisturizing gel, that leaves your skin soft and refreshed; an anti-bacterial tonic, perfect for sensitive just shaved-face, excellent after waxing, electrolysis or other hair removal procedure, great for inflammatory conditions such as acne and eczema.”- Dr. Alkaitis

I used this product immediately following the toner. I would not use it following hair removal, it would burn. My skin was a little flushed after using this product, which dissapeared after about 10 minutes. I believe the organic grain alcohol, atlantic kelp and red seaweed are the cause of redness. I would not use on imflamed acne nor eczema (I suffer from both) it will burn. Recommended for normal skin.

Ingredients: Into our base of Organic Aloe Vera Gel* and Witch Hazelº the following organic and wild-crafted herbals are blended: organically grown grape alcohol* (from the fermentation of organically grown grains). Greater Nettle*, Wild Chamomileº, Myrrhº, European Elder*, Sweet Weed*, and French Lavender*. Organic Nourishing Treatment Oil

This nourishing treatment oil is truly amazing! It seals moisture and absorbs quickly into the skin and has a heavenly smell. A must for after-bath, shower and sauna and makes a excellent massage oil and skin tonic. Great for your face. Excellent as a scalp and hair tonic.”-Dr. Alkaitis

I applied this product to my face and scalp. It smells nice (sandalwood), is not heavy and doesn't leave skin shiny or oily. I absolutely love it on my scalp and hair to keep it moisturized. My skin seemed to like it, but I broke out. Not necessarily meant for acne-prone skin. Too pricey for me. I recommend for all skin types, except oily and acne-prone. Makes a great scalp treatment.

Ingredients: Into a base of virgin cold pressed organic oils (organic Jojoba*, St. John's Wort* and Andean Mountain Rose Hip seed* oils), the following organic and wild-crafted herbals are blended: Indian Madderº, Country Sarsaparillaº, Amazon root* and Liquorice*. Organic Enzyme Exfoliating Mask

Employs a broad range of enzymes and is a active and effective anti-aging mask; rejevenates the complexion by gently yet thoroughly removing all accumulated cellular and microbial debris from the skin.” Dr. Alkaitis

I really like this mask, it delivers on all its claims! My skin looked fantastic after removing this mask, refreshed, glowing, and smooth. The mask supplies skin with essential phytonutrients, antioxidants, minerals and immune support. Bromelain and papain (just to name a few) work together to exfoliate, while bilberry, strawberry, raspberry, turmeric exfoliate and brighten skin tone. I mixed each powder mask into a paste with a TINY amount of water. Too much water and it will be too runny to apply. It is suggested to use twice a month, but for oily and acne prone skin, I would recommend once a week. I recommend all skin types try this mask!

Ingredients: Organic Oat Buds*, Blueberry*, Bilberry*, Strawberry*, Raspberry*, Grapes* and Blackberry*; Extracts of Barley Grass*, Turmeric* and Cat's Claw; Enzyme Exfoliating Complex consisting of Cellulase, Lipase, Lactase, Protease Complex, Xylinase, Amylase, Bromelain, Papain, Maltase, Beta-Glucanase, Invertase, Pectinase, Mannanase, Phytase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Arabinosidase and Glucoamylase. * - Signifies certified organically grown.

All Dr. Alkaitis mask's can be mixed with plain yogurt for soft and smooth skin. My skin looked refreshed after using this mask.

Is the ultimate therapeutic health food for the skin; excellent for use after peels, microdermabrasion, ect. It is the only mask that contains an animal product ; Certified Organic Goat's Milk Protein.”-Dr. Alkaitis

Dr. Alkaitis mask's are by far my favorite products from the skincare line. I like to call this mask, “Skin Food”. I has a variety of vegetables: broccolli, carrots, sweet potatoe, cauliflower, cucumber, beets, tomatoe and brussels sprouts. Organic Purifying Cleanser

It cleans the skin gently, deeply and thoroughly; removes old skin cells and leaves the skin moist, soft and refreshed. It also makes a terrific shaving gel; should not be used as an eye make-up and/or mascara remover.”-Dr. Alkaitis

I liked the smell of the cleanser, but my sensitive skin turned a little pink. The cleanser is a amber color paste (same color as the toner, soothing gel, and treatment oil.) The lather is very minimal and leaves a squeaky clean feeling. This after cleansing feeling made my skin feel sticky and unclean. I would prefer a product that does not leave a residue. I chose to cleanse with another product to remove the film. It removes mineral makeup, but not heavy foundation/concealer. I did not feel it exfoliated nor left my skin refreshed. My oily skin felt tight and heavy from the filmy residue.  I love the line, but this product was not for me.

Ingredients: Added into Dr. Alkaitis' Organic Castile Cleansing Base (compounded from virgin, cold pressed organic Olive*, organic Shea*, Organic Jojoba*, organic Coconut*, organic Sesame*, organic Castor* and organic Borage* oils), the following ingredients are added: Organic Aloe Vera Gel *, Organic Herbal Skin Repair Complex (made up of Chamomile*, Plantain*, Black Elder*, Greater Nettle*, Myrrhº, Bitter Orange*, Rosemary*, Marsh Mallow*, Benzoinº, Marigold*, True Lavender*, Sea Wrackº and Atlantic Seaweedº), Vegetable Glycerin, Citrus seed extract, Natural vitamin A complex, Natural vitamin C complex, Natural vitamin E complex (D-alpha, beta, gamma, delta tocopherols), 100% pure Essential Oils. * - Signifies certified organically grown. º - Signifies ethically wild-crafted.

A light foaming cleanser that, “Reduces potentially problematic bacteria on the skin.”-Neostrata
The cleanser contains 0.3% Triclosan (anti-bacterial), Gluconolactone (a PHA offers anti-aging benefits), soothing chamomile, Pro-vitamin B5 (panthenol), fragrance-free, soap free and Dermatologist-Tested. It is suitable for all skin types including acne, rosacea and rinses off easily. It left my skin feeling very clean, comfortable (not tight), soft, and smooth (without a film). I experienced no irritation with this product.  Perfect for removing makeup.
Great for skin sensitive to other acne fighting ingredients, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil, and sulfur.  This cleanser is suitable for those using prescription retinoids for acne.  Gluconolactone (a active ingredient in the cleanser ) also provides light exfoliation, hydration, is a anti-oxidant and provides a smoother texture for those using glycolic acid products.  This boosts the results of other products combined with gluconolactone.  I also experienced a brightened complexion.

Skin Update October 30,2011:  After continuous use of this cleanser, my skin has been extremely clear!  I can count on one hand the number of tiny pimples I have gotten since using this cleanser.  This is amazing results for my extremely oily skin.  My pores LIKE to clog up.  I had stubborn forehead breakouts that cleared and remained clear.  My cheeks, chin and jaw are clear and smooth!  This is hands down, my favorite acne cleanser.  This cleanser dissolves oil, does not strip skin making it feel tight and uncomfortable.  My skin is noticeably less oily during the day!  No more greasy skin two hours after washing my face.  My skin feels more balanced and clean, even while living in Los Angeles.

Review: 100% Pure Purity Facial Cleanser+Mask & Cabernet Grape Nourishing Body Cream

100 % Pure Purity Facial Cleanser + Mask

I recently hopped on the natural bandwagon and love it. Why do I love natural products? My skin is hypersensitive, which makes chemicals, synthetic ingredients and dyes my enemy. They are highly irritating to my skin. My skin is also very oily and acne prone. Although natural products can be highly irritating, this product does not irritate my sensitive skin. 100% Pure products are 100% natural, vegan, cruelty free. The packaging is BPA and Phthalate free.

The Purity Collection is formulated specifically to give you a clear complexion and to protect against future breakouts. Detoxifying essential oils kill the acne causing bacteria while nourishing seaweeds and purifying herbs protect against future breakouts. Acnegenic skin is raw and sensitive and needs skincare that is non pore clogging , gentle and effective.” -100% Pure

The cleanser+mask comes in a tube, the cleanser is a dark moss green shade, the consistency is not too thick, nor thin. It smells like Extra peppermint gum, which makes me hungry lol. Immediately upon application of the cleanser, I feel tingling from the peppermint and tea tree. After massaging in the cleanser and thoroughly rinsing my face, I realized my skin has never felt this clean before. EVER. I become excited every time I cleanse with this product.

The mask is equally great. It detoxifies skin. Your skin will feel and look amazing after using this for a week, I promise. My skin has immensely improved since using this cleanser+mask. I wish I tried this product sooner, it is my new favorite cleanser!

Acne fighting ingredients in the cleanser+mask include, Lavender, Burdock Root, Tea Tree, Spirulina, Sea Buckthorn, and Goldenseal. Calming and anti-inflammatory ingredients (fantastic for irritated skin): Aloe Vera, Green Tea, Echinacea, and Calendula. I recommend this cleanser for everyone, from clear skin to cystic acne. Your skin will thank you for it.

Review: Ole Henriksen Blemish Attack Mask

I was extremely excited to try Ole Henriksen products, because every time I see a photo of the man, his complexion is beaming! His skincare products have a great reputation.

The product I tried is the Blemish Attack Mask. The product claims, "A purifying and anti-inflammatory mask that minimizes breakouts and absorbs excess oil." This mask is great for oily skin and acne conditions. My skin falls under both categories and has had amazing results from this product. The mask smells like kaolin clay and essential oils.  I applied the mask generously and left it on for 30 minutes. Upon application, my skin felt a slight tingle.  After rinsing the mask, my skin did not feel tight, but comfortable. My skin was calm and any irritation I previously had was gone. I also slept with this mask on, waking up to hydrated, calm, repaired, and clean skin!

My skin looks revitalized, my clogged pores shrunk over night and were easier to extract. The mask contains kaolin, bentonite clay, .5% salicylic acid, zinc, copper (calms redness, supports collagen production), rosemary, juniper, and eucalyptus essential oils ( 3 great astringents.) These ingredients are fantastic for inflamed acne. Use during a facial or twice a week. Red skin or swelling will calm down with this mask. I look forward to trying more Ole Henriksen products!

Ingredients: Salicylic Acid 0.50% Water, Kaolin, Glycerin, Montmorillonite, Stearic Acid, Aspalathus Linearis (Red Tea) Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis (White Tea) Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Juniperus Communis Fruit Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Flower Oil, Rosemary Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Copper Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Manganese Gluconate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Allantoin, Lactic Acid, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Laurate, Potassium Hydroxide, Gluconolactone, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Limonene.

Review: PCA Skin Smoothing Toner

This is a strong toner! A toner should remove cleanser residue and return skin back to its pH level. I love PCS Skin products but this product is just not for me. PCA claims, "A high-concentration AHA solution formulated to refine pores and remove superficial dead skin cells, leaving the skin smooth and clear. Appropriate for normal to oily skin ". My skin became irritated and blotchy upon applying this toner. It did not help with my congested skin, but it did remove excess makeup and cleanser residue. My skin felt tight, not exactly back to its pH level. The combination of lactic acid and citric acid is too harsh on my skin.  This toner strips the skin and I would not recommend it.

Ingredients: Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice.

Review: L'oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base

Primer is a necessity for my oily skin. I have to be very careful with primers, because most break me out. Dimethicone is a key ingredient in primers to fill in pores and create a smooth and even canvas for foundation. This ingredient is also known to clog pores because it is a sillicone and its texture is thick. This combination can be bad for oily skin.

I experienced some clogged pores after using this primer. It comes in a small jar, I suggest not sticking fingers in it to prevent contamination. Use a small popsicle stick to remove product from jar and use the back of your hand as a pallete. L'oreal claims, "Get the perfect skin texture, instantly and all day. Smoothes lines Hides pores Banishes imperfections The silky, lightweight formula glides onto skin, leaving it velvety-smooth to the touch. The result-a unified matte finish that's flawless".

When applied, my skin tone looked even, matte, more flawless. A decent oil control product and a little goes a long way. It's a good buy and I would recommend for normal skin. Tip: Make sure you thoroughly cleanse skin before bed to prevent clogged pores and remove impurities.  I would not repurchase, because I broke out.

Ingredients: Cyclohexasiloxane, Dimethicone, Dimethicone Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica, Acrylates Crosspolymer, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Aluminum Hydroxide.

Review: PCA Skin Pigment Gel

I ordered a massive quantity of PCA Skincare about 4 months ago and it has dramatically improved my acne and hyperpigmentation. The PCA Skin Pigment Gel is effective but can be irritating as your skin adjusts. This is a aggressive treatment. I suggest starting use 1x a day and maybe every other day. Increase use as your skin adjusts and do not use other strong exoliating products & treatments.

The gel comes in a glass jar with a pump. Sometimes the pump can become jammed, I would just unscrew the pump and put a few drops on my fingertips. PCA Skin claims, "The penetrating 'triple-action' of hydroquinone, kojic acid and azelaic acid, plus lactic and citric acid helps to exfoliate, lighten and inhibit hyperpigmentation (skin discoloration) and age spots." Hydroquinone, Kojic and Azelaic acid are lighteners. Citric acid and Lactic (also lightens) exfoliates dead skin cells.

My skin was a bit sensitive to this product as it adjusted but very effective. My skin tone was noticeably more even, but the results did not last. I wore spf 30 everyday and avoided sun exposure, so this was disappointing. Remember that products with hydroquinone should not be used over 3 months, or skin will begin to darken. It is not known why hydroquionone takes this affect. After 3 months, try a lightener or brightener with kojic, arbutin, mulberry, lactic acid, azelaic acid, to maintain results. Wear SPF 30+ everyday (try SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50), it is a must to prevent re-darkening of the treated skin.

I feel like this gel did more for my acne, then my hyperpigmentation.  Great for light uneven skintone or sun damage, but not very heavy hyperpigmentation.  This gel smoothed the texture of my skin and offers great exfoliation. Excellent for stubborn forehead comedones.

Ingredients: Witch Hazel, Castor Oil Methyl Glycol, Kojic Acid, Hydroquinone, Lactic Acid and Citric Acids (pH adjusters), Cellulose.

Review: Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

I am obsessed with exfoliating! A scrub does not have to be gritty or harsh to exfoliate. It can actually create micro-tears in your skin, leading to irritation and possibly scarring. I discovered Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant about 4 years ago through a sample giveaway. It has been a staple in my skincare regime ever since!

Dermalogica claims, " A unique Rice-based enzyme powder that microfoliates dulling debris and helps stimulate cell renewal to reveal brighter, smoother skin." It is a extremely gentle powder exfoliant and can be used on a daily basis. Add a little bit of water to create a paste and massage into skin, even better if you have Clarisonic Mia. My skin has never been irritated from using this, even when my acne was inflamed. I continue to use it, as my acne is under control.

Exfoliating also increases effectiveness and penetration of other products like eye cream, serum, moisturizer and treatments. I use this exfoliant 3x/week and sometimes more (it can be used daily!) I love to use before a mask to allow ingredients to penetrate better. This product can be used for all skin conditions.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Microcrystalline Cellulose, Talc, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Colloidal Oatmeal, Oryza Sativa Bran (Rice), Oryza Sativa Starch (Rice), PCA, Allyl Methacrylates Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Limonene, Methylparaben, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Allantoin (Comfrey Root), Salicylic Acid, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil (Grapefruit), Papain, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract (Licorice), Cyclodextrin, Melaleuca Altemifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil (Tea Tree)

Review: Osea Undaria Algae Oil & White Algae Mask

I was excited to try Osea Undaria Algae Oil, because it is the lines staple product. I have never been a fan of body oils until I tried this oil. My facial skin is already oily, I normally try to avoid oil overload. I love this oil for my entire body, especially my elbows, feet and stretch marks.

A little goes a long way with this product. My skin loves this lightweight oil, it holds in moisture well, softens and smooths my skin. The oil comes in a glass jar with a pump. Osea claims, " Nourish your skin daily with this lightweight marine-based oil and it will glow. For all skin types." The natural scent is enchanting and does not irritate my sensitive skin. This oil is contains omega fatty acids, vitamins A, B, C, E, seed oils- sesame, acai, passion fruit and babbaso.

Undaria Algae Oil is a vegan product, biodegradable, not tested on animals. I would recommend this to everyone to try, especially for those that have psioasis. A friend of mine has psoriasis on her scalp and this oil worked wonders for her. Her psoriasis cleared up nicely and continues to maintain healthy skin.
